An unexplained absence triggers a message to the learner's guardian while the day is still in progress, which is the only point at which the information is useful.
Patterns rather than incidents
One absence is noise. Fifteen absences across a term is a safeguarding matter. Attendance rates are calculated continuously per learner, per stream and for the whole school, so the pattern surfaces on its own.
Attendance data is only valuable while the day is still running. A register that is collected on paper, carried to the office at lunchtime and typed up the following week tells you something you can no longer act on.

What happens next
An unexplained absence generates a message to the learner’s guardian the same morning. For many Kenyan schools this single behaviour is the strongest argument for the whole system: a guardian who believed their child was at school finds out that they are not, in time to do something about it.
Over a term, the same records produce attendance rates for every learner, stream and class, plotted as a trend on the leadership dashboard and summarised on the report card. The pattern that a class teacher might have sensed but could not evidence becomes a number they can raise.
